Which Renewable Technology is right for your home?

Warm comfortable homes and high bills are key concerns for homeowners, renewable heating technologies such as heat pumps, solar heating and biomass are the next wave of green additions.

These technologies are being backed by the government’s renewable heat incentive (RHI), which offers quarterly cash payments over seven years for generating low-carbon heat. The RHI makes the idea potentially even more attractive as this is similar to the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) incentive which ended this April.

However, it is important to make sure that a new, low-carbon heating system is really right for your home and the first thing to remember is that every heat-generating system gives you more for your money if your home is well insulated before it is installed.

In general, it is better to take an insulation first approach to make your home more sustainable however installing a renewable heating system will enable you to gain all the comfort benefits a gas heating system can bring.

There are a number of options to choose from, which generate heat in different ways and can play different roles i.e. providing hot water, heating or both.

Biomass boilers for example supply all your heating needs whereas solar thermal panels will only provide hot water. Heat pumps are good for heating your home but are not as efficient at heating water too.

Alternatively, different renewable systems can complement each other, for example, solar thermal systems work well with heat pumps because together they can provide efficient water and space heating.

In the coming years, there will be many more renewable heat systems installed in homes and communities.
